“He is the ‘singing cop,’ the New York City police officer who sang at the funerals of those claimed by the attacks on the World Trade Center. He sang at the World Series. He sang at the Macy's Thanksgiving Day Parade. He sang at the Rockefeller Center Christmas tree-lighting ceremony. He sang, and sang again, ‘God Bless America’ and ‘The Star-Spangled Banner.’ Old Glory fluttered in the breeze whenever and wherever he sang,” wrote reporter Jeff Rivers in the Hartford Courant in December 2002.
As much as Daniel Rodriguez may be well known for his singing, he is also tirelessly involved in numerous philanthropic and charitable events. It is for that work which we are honoring him here today.
Daniel has lent his time and talent to many benefit and fund-raising events for veterans, fire fighters, policemen and special causes like the Scoliosis Care Foundation and Ronald McDonald House Charities. He supports the USO, began a project, “Songs for Soldiers,” to provide CDs in USO care packages for troops overseas and has even volunteered at the warehouse to pack and distribute the packages. Daniel performed in Stamford, Connecticut, joined by Police, U.S. Marines, and prominent stars from World Wrestling Entertainment to support a special Toys for Tots event. These are but a few examples of his involvement in our American community.
Daniel is currently on a tour across America, bringing his beautiful voice and love of America everywhere he goes. His award was accepted by C. Lon Smith of Fort Lauderdale, husband of Daniel's accompanist, Gail Smith, who made the nomination.
