Jean Holmes Jean Holmes, 1st VP and Co-Chair,
National League of American Pen Women's
Lincoln Bicentennial Committee,
accepts the award on behalf of the league.
Abraham Lincoln, born February 12, 1809, is one of America's most beloved presidents. To commemorate the two hundredth birthday of this American icon, the US Congress established the Abraham Lincoln Bicentennial Commission (ALBC) at the beginning of the twenty-first century. The ALBC was made responsible for planning a nationwide celebratory tribute to begin February 2008 and extend to February 2010.
The National League of American Pen Women and its nationwide membership eagerly embraced this historic opportunity for collaborative engagement in community and educational outreach and began soliciting its membership to submit artistic, dramatic, literary, and musical works to commemorate Lincoln the man and his times. The NLAPW take great pride in the talents of its membership. Happy Birthday, Mr. Lincoln, A Commemorative Collage, was published by the NLAPW, who were honored to add their publication to the bicentennial celebration of the birth of President Abraham Lincoln.
The women of NLAPW have honored our sixteenth president — who understood the concept of freedom and liberty, and whose unwavering commitment to the union and the country he loved as envisioned by our founding fathers — in a unique way.
