American Gold Star Mothers | Adult Community |
| For the past 18 years, Georgianna Carter Krell has worked tirelessly, devoting thousands of hours, at the Miami Veterans Medical Center, feeding those who cannot feed themselves, writing letters for and reading to patients, and attending to their general welfare. She lobbies Congress and the President when a veteran's cause is in need of an advocate. Georgianna sets an example for all of us to emulate when it comes to giving to our communities and to keeping alive the spirit for which so many men and women of the United States armed forces have sacrified their lives in defense of our freedom. Bruce Wayne Carter, Georgianna's son, was killed in Vietnam in 1969. He was 19 years old. For his bravery, he was awarded the Congressional Medal of Honor posthumously. He is the only Miami-Dade County Medal recipient. Georgianna's efforts to keep alive his memory include getting a street named after him in Hialeah, Florida, a Marine Corps League detachment named after him, and the Miami Florida VA Medical Center named after him. “I feel proud to be Bruce's mother and I am so proud to be able to stand up with the Medal of Honor recipients. I may be small, but I carry the torch high for my son.” |
